This is a story of defeat, that I’m now proud to share. A reminder that we makers and doers deal with a lot, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. 

A few years ago a couple reached out to us that had an upcoming anniversary. They said they had tried some of our products and wanted us to make an Almond Cake for their special occasion. Only thing was, at this time we didn’t offer  an Almond Cake. They were so sweet and eager that I couldn’t help but say “okay.” We explained to them that I was going to create this recipe specially for them. Which is something we don’t normally do, but none the less excited that we could help them celebrate. 

So I got to work creating and testing this new recipe, even made special trips to the grocery store for ingredients. Overall, I was really happy and surprised with how delicious this recipe turned out and knew the couple was going to love this cake as much as we did. 

Well, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Not too long after they got the cake, they reached out to tell us how much they hated it. I think I must of blacked out at one point from shock because I can’t even remember what they said, just how awful they were about it. 

This crushed me for a while and really made me question myself. Though feeling beaten down, I knew this cake was so good! So I thought “fuck it” and added this to our line up as our “Almond Tea Cake.” And no joke… this item immediately became our BIGGEST SELLER!! People gushed over this cake and came in regularly just for it. Today, it’s still one of our biggest and fastest selling products. We have easily sold thousands upon thousands of this cake. 

I learned a lot from this experience. A lot about who I am. A lot about people. But mainly I learned how important it is to trust myself. I hope this story inspires you to do the same.
